Trends That Are More Than Trendy

Built into the definition of trendy—“fashionable and up to date”—seems to be the idea that trends are fleeting. While that may be true in fashion, I think it’s less so in design, where memorable trends can have quite a shelf life. This year’s design trends focus on being inspired by travel and nature as well as uniqueness. While I’m looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings, I love these 2023 trends and feel they will continue into the new year.

1. Evoke the feeling of travel

Take your ideal vacation destination—anything from a beachy resort to a dreamy European villa—and capture elements of style from it in your own home, creating an escape you can enjoy any time.

2. Look to nature

Balance your senses by embracing the use of natural textiles and materials like crude clay, terra-cotta, handcrafted finishings and glazed tiles—along with color schemes inspired by nature as well as nature itself in the form of living plants.

3. Create a unique interior

At the other end of the spectrum, be unconventional by incorporating striking visual effects like curvy and geometric shapes, fanciful rugs, monochromatic rooms in vivid shades and two-toned cabinets in contrasting colors.

4. Use stone in unexpected ways

Think red, coral, deep blue and jewel tone marble as well as exotic types of porcelain, soapstone and granite for side tables and nightstands, accent walls, tables, bathtubs and countertops that transition into bold backsplashes.

Diane’s Take: Which of these trends speaks to you? Maybe think of an area you love to travel to and incorporate some of the colors, culture, and style from it. Perhaps you want to embrace nature, which has a way of balancing our lives and keeping us on a good path. Or show off your individuality through the creative use of materials and colors.
