Steer Clear of Outdated Bedroom Décor

The focus of a bedroom should be good sleep and relaxation. While trends come and go, and everyone might have a different definition of what’s cozy, Real Simple magazine recently published an article including some “don’ts”: 4 Outdated Bedroom Décor Pieces Designers Say You Should Avoid. It recommends eliminating the following décor elements to help create an inviting space.

1. Matching Bedroom Sets.

Instead of going for matchy-matchy, mix different styles and colors of furniture to make the room more interesting.

2. Wallpapered or Painted Accent Walls.

It’s best to wallpaper the whole room or paint the whole room in one color rather than having one wall that’s the focal point. Accent colors can be used in bedding, artwork and pillows.

3. Heavy or Overstyled Bedding.

Keep the look of your bedding simple with one or two blankets and a throw at the end of the bed, and minimize — or eliminate — the use of decorative pillows.

4. Low Beds.

The bed should be a focal point and have significance in a room. An upholstered or solid wood headboard with a substantial height are good options.
Diane’s Take: I mostly agree with what the designers recommend but don’t mind matching bedroom sets. I do like the entire room in one color instead of an accent wall and believe more simplistic the bedding is better for comfort and maintenance. I also prefer higher beds with beautiful headboards.
