Home Décor Tips: What You Don’t Need

You may think when working with an interior designer the focus is on what you need in your home to create your intended design. While that’s certainly true, it’s not the only value a designer can provide — we can also counsel you on things to steer clear of when it comes to home décor.

After reading a recent article in Real Simple magazine, “5 Things Your Home Doesn’t Need,” I thought it would be interesting to share what other designers have to say about certain past trends and add my own thoughts. Some of these tips may resonate with you, as they were noted in previous blog posts about home organizing and decluttering.

Here are five things your home doesn’t need:

1. Matching furniture sets

It is much more inviting to have coordinating furniture pieces rather than matching sets.

2. More décor

Home décor does not need to fill every space. Having a less cluttered space results in a clean look and allows the focus to be on specific accessories.

3. Large collections

Although interesting, these collections can look outdated and disorganized, and they are notorious for collecting dust.

4. Mass-produced artwork

Look for unique pieces of art, photography or sculptural art to adorn your walls rather than purchasing generic artwork that lacks personality.

5. Abundance of pillows

Too many pillows can overwhelm a sofa or bed. Add just enough pillows to add color, texture and comfort, with the goal being to make the room look welcoming.
Diane’s Take: I’m a fan of less is more and being original with your home décor — neither of those approaches will ever go out of style. The fun of designing is to mix styles, colors, and patterns to create décor for your home that’s meaningful to you.
