5 Décor Elements to Remove From Your Home, According to Interior Designers

While reading a recent article in Real Simple magazine, “5 Dated Décor Pieces You Should Swap Out ASAP, According to Designers,” I thought its topic was a good continuation of last month’s blog post, “Home Décor Tips: What You Don’t Need.” Again, I feel it is interesting to share what other designers have to say about certain décor and provide my own thoughts.

Here are the pieces that can get the heave-ho:

1. Word art

There was a time when this type of art was fun and inspirational but now it looks outdated. This art can be swapped out for photos printed on canvas or other more meaningful art.

2. Cold neutrals

Greys are being replaced with warmer colors for walls, bedding, pillows, and furniture. These richer colors are good for promoting well-being.

3. Unlacquered brass

Although still a beautiful finish, most gold hardware has been on trend for a while. There are other unique options available, such as verdigris.

4. Neutral furniture

Furniture featuring bold patterns, textures, and colors is more interesting than neutral linen furniture. What you have now can be reupholstered, if still in style and in good condition.

1. Angled-leg furniture

Unless it is a classic piece, angled-leg furniture can look dated and uninteresting. Beaded traditional legs can change up the look in a contemporary home.
Diane’s Take: Design is ever changing. The trend right now is moving toward color, eye-catching details, and an expression of individuality. Be unique and original with your home furnishings, walls, and accessories. As I have said before, “the fun of designing is to mix styles, colors, and patterns and to have meaningful décor in your home.” Choose décor that suits your lifestyle and personality.
