Toward the end of every year, “experts” like to predict trends for the year to come. It’s pretty rare to take a look back and see if those prognostications came to pass but since we’re almost halfway through 2023 (already!), I thought it would be interesting to see how on the nose some design trend predictions have been.
Bob Vila, a highly trusted name when it comes to home renovation and repair who you may know from the show, “This Old House,” forecasted 10 home décor trends for this year in December 2022. I think six of them, more than half, are coming true and I’ve shared my thoughts about them below.
White kitchens will always remain a classic and have proven the test of time. They can also go vintage with the addition of accent pieces and pops of color.
Luxury accents like gold candlesticks, mirrored accessories and velvet textiles add elegance to a space without breaking the bank.
Floral prints in pillows, drapes and rugs are cheerful and help evoke a folksy or cozy style.
Warm Colors
Warm colors are ideal for those who embrace color or prefer neutrals. Reds, oranges, yellows and pinks are popular choices for the former while brown, beige and terracotta are replacing gray for the latter.
Intentional Lighting
Lighting, like window treatments, adds an important finishing touch and should not be overlooked. Countless products are available to help create the perfect mood, including color-changing light bulbs.
Curved Shapes
A departure from the clean lines often seen in modern design, curved shapes in sofas and coffee tables, curved walls and arched doorways add a soft, flowing feel to any space.
Diane’s Take: I’m glad Bob Vila was right about these design trends. I really like them and think they will be around for a while.
